Great Thatch Island lies only two minutes from Tortola, the most populated island in the BVI.
Seventeen historical and cultural features on Great Thatch collectively house 270 years of history—the story of a period in the Virgin Islands' history about which very little is known.
Great Thatch consists of the ruins of three settlements, a customs house, three burial grounds, agricultural and fishing infrastructure, a network of roads and footpaths, and a chapel.
At its peak, over a hundred people lived and worked, and many died here.
Each year, literally millions of people pass by the island on cruise ships alone.
And yet, only a handful of those people in the world—literally—know the Great Thatch story. Few people have even set foot on Great Thatch in over a hundred years.
It has truly been a lost island…
We think it should be discovered.
Our goal is to create a living historical environment on Great Thatch: the heritage development of the island.
